Salt is essential to health... BUT the SAND accompanying salt can be DEADLY!!!
You MUST insure any salt being consumed has gone through a cleaning process that leaves ONLY PURE SALT which is so vital for health!
Years ago heart researchers finally unlocked the mystery of Athero-Sclerotic-Plaque; that it can form around calcium silicates or microscopic sand. Further research led to the understanding that salt could potentially be the culprit... Now after 30 years of low sodium diets being linked to all kinds of problems; not the least of which is sudden or premature death, the medical world is beginning to reverse its take on salt. Medical science has now clearly demonstrated that the "top 4 most critical elements for robust health are iron, iodine, calcium and sodium, and all of these are typically available in our food supply except for enough daily sodium." (Medical Editor-in-Chief, David E. Larson, M.D. Mayo Medical Center)
I've been asked to write a brief article about salt. Yeh right, me brief? That'll be the day. How do I reduce 293 potential books about my passion for salt in order to create a single column (or should I say pillar) of salt? In the spirit of "try" - here we go.
First off you may be wondering about the title I've chosen. It actually says it all.
Athero - comes from the Greek Athera meaning "gruel". Gruel was a "thin watery soup" given to the poor and imprisoned to act as severe punishment, driving one, over time, to the point of weakened, malnourished exhaustion. If something is grueling it means "exhausting struggle". The word "pus" has its origins in the word gruel.
Sclerotic is Greek for hardening and Occlusion is Latin for blockage; meaning to close or to prevent passage.
As this phrase, Athro - Sclerotic - Occlusion applies to the study of disease or pathology of the human heart and its blood vessels, it simply refers to deposits made of "degenerative accumulations" (gruel) on the inner most walls of arteries, that tend to grow as they fill in and harden over time creating a blockage of the blood flow to the body.
As simple as this explanation is, it is also very dangerous to human life. In fact, all too often the first sign of this kind of heart disease is SUDDEN DEATH. Where blood [flow] stops, life ends. It is for this reason that nearly all heart research has recently turned to prevention not treatment. And that brings me to the sub-title in this article heading: Discus, Trophy, & Wall Plaques. This is really the "Dirt on Salt" as it applies to your heart.
"Atherosclerosis (hardened arterial gunk) is a form of arterialsclerosis (hardening of the arteries) characterized by deposition of atheromatous plaques. Analysis of atheromatous plaques indicate they contain calcium silicates, cholesterol and lipids (fats). They tend to collect on the inner most layer of the walls of large and medium sized arteries." (Taken from the second edition of the American Heritage Dictionary.)
If you look up plaque in a good dictionary it will say as one of the definitions, "a flate plate, slab or disk (Latin - Discus) leading to the formation of a growth or patch" In atherosclerosis the "growth" is the clumping of platelets, through a series of steps originating at the site of the rough, torn lesions in the smooth lining of the inner wall potentially caused by the jagged edges of small microscopic pieces of mineralized glass (particles of sand) called: calcium silicates. This can create a vicious cycle of arterial sludge growth. Calcium silicates can trap platelets, platelets can trap fats, fats can trap cholesterols and the resulting atheroma (blockage) traps more calcium silicates leading to calcification or hardening of the obstruction and potentially hardening the artery itself. This finding leads to a drug theraphy called "calcium channel blockers" These drugs function by blocking the entry of calcium into the cells. This has a tendency to stop the growth of the blockage that leads to narrowing of the channel or passageway of the blood flow (this procedure is not without risks).
So let's tie this together. Plaque means: "small, flat circular object" in this case the discus in the form of microscopic sand or calcium silicates. The Discus of sand can potentially injure the inner wall of an artery causing platelets to accumulate on the lining of the artery for healing. This can lead to the collection of fats, cholesterol, and more layers of calcium. This "growth" is referred to as a Trophy in pathology, meaning "to nourish". Hypertrophy means "much nourishment" or "exaggerated growth" as in Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy wherein the muscular walls of the left ventricle of your heart (the main pumping chamber) also becomes thickened, calcified and stiff. This impair the inflow and outflow of blood in your heart. A dangerous condition.
Finally what does this have to do with salt? Everything! Years ago heart researchers finally unlocked the mystery of Athero-Sclerotic-Plaque; that it can form around calcium silicates or microscopic sand. Further research led to the understanding that salt could potentially be the culprit. Hence because salt is full of Disks (calcium silicates) researchers warned the doctors. The doctors warned their patients. Patients warned their loved ones and public media warned the world. DON'T EAT SALT!! was the battle cry. Now after 30 years of low sodium diets being linked to all kinds of problems; not the least of which is premature death, the medical world is beginning to reverse its take on salt. Medical science has now clearly demonstrated that the "top 4 most critical elements for robust health are iron, iodine, calcium and sodium, and all of these are typically available in our food supply except for enough daily sodium."
